Actress lips off at mouthless poster
If you're weirded out by those "Silent Hill" posters, imagine being the little girl in them.
Jodelle Ferland got the shock of her life when she unfurled the new scary movie marketing ploy, which features her likeness - but without any lips.
"The movie people were kind enough to send a poster to our home," says Jodelle's mother, Valerie. "But when she opened it up, she said, 'Where's my mouth?' It was very freaky."
The 11-year-old actress - in New York this week to promote the movie about a missing girl in a spooky town - agrees.
"I didn't know that I was on the poster before I saw it," says Jodelle, who spent Monday at the zoo in Central Park. "I was creeped out when I did. I think my friends were also creeped out to see me with no mouth."
Strangers have been unsettled, too. Around the city, people are drawing in smiles, pouts and other pie holes for the youngster with the mouthless mug.
That's just human nature, according to Anthony Pratkanis, professor of social psychology at University of California, Santa Cruz.
"People feel a compulsion to complete the girl's face - either through graffiti or in the mind," he says.
That said, Jodelle has her own solution for viewing her otherworldly image on the poster.
"When I look at it I put my hand over where the mouth should be," she says. "That way I don't know the mouth is missing." She hasn't decided if the poster will go up on her bedroom wall, but she has picked out her outfit for the movie's premiere in Los Angeles.
"I'm wearing a blue dress," she says. "And clear lip gloss."
