Pitt Meadows girl, 6, bids for an Emmy

Today, Jodelle Ferland flies to New York City to compete for a 2001 Daytime Emmy award. Yesterday, the Pitt Meadows actress fought back tears as she watched her helium balloon fly away. Jodelle, at just six years old, is the youngest nominee ever for the prestigious Emmy award. Recently relocated to the Lower Mainland from Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island, she is nominated for her starring role as four-year-old Desi in Showtime's Mermaid (a family movie-of-the-week, still awaiting its Canadian release). The elementary-school "career" actress is up against some of Hollywood's top talen, including Ellen Burstyn, Ossie Davis, Peter Falk and Alfre Woodard. Fresh from Los Angeles after winning this year's Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Movie/Pilot (an accolade she shares with Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Roberts, Drew Barrymore, and Tori Spelling), Jodelle seems more concerned with her lost balloon than her soaring career.
"Um, can you hang on a minute?" says mom Valerie Ferland, on the phone from a local audition she's attending with her daughter.
"She just lost her helium balloon and she's not in the best of humour."
"I moved to the mainland because of Jodelle," continues Valerie.
"When she was four, she memorized a 300-page script. She just has a good memory."
Valerie, a modern-day Shirley Partridge, home-schools Jodelle between her child's acting jobs, and also minds the careers of her other children - Marisha, 14, a budding actress, and Jeremy, 16, a senior member of Vancouver's Youth Symphony Orchestra. Jodelle has appeared in five television projects, including a leading role on an episode of the popular series Dark Angel, filmed in Vancouver and starring Jessica Alba. Eventually, Jodelle regains her composure and comes to the phone.
Is she excited about going to New York City?
"Yep."
Is it hard to memorize all those lines?
"Nope."
How do you do it?
"I don't know."
What else do you like to do?
"I like playing with my toys."
Have you met anyone famous?
"I met Jessica Alba I think. She was nice."
Do you want to be in the movies when you grow up?
"I want to make sculptures with clay and then I want to paint them," the young Emmy nominee reveals.
"Goodbye," says Jodelle, and heads off to find another balloon.
