Pitt Meadows actresses Brittney Wilson and Jodelle Ferland will be walking down the red carpet at the Young Artist Awards in Los Angeles tomorrow night.
Nine-year-old Ferland is being nominated for her guest appearance on Smallville last year, while 13-year-old Wilson is up for an award for her role as Myra in the ongoing Nickelodeon series Romeo. Both girls will also be presenters at the ceremony.
"I'm not nervous about the awards, I'm just happy to be nominated," Wilson said.
Wilson, who initially began acting to save money for her post-secondary education, now says she can't live without it. She has appeared in numerous Barbie commercials since the age of six, has a reoccurring role on the hit Nickelodeon series Romeo, and can currently be seen in the Universal motion picture Connie and Carla.
"I play a young Carla," Wilson said. "It was my first read through for a major motion picture. I sing and dance in the opening scene of the movie."
As for the Romeo series, which stars Lil' Romeo, Wilson said the show is very popular in the United States and there is chance that she may be recognized during her stay in California.
"That would be so cool," Wilson said.
Wilson admits that acting is a time-consuming profession, but says she tries to enjoy her other hobbies which include basketball, volleyball, dirt biking and swimming. While filming Romeo, Wilson works on her school assignments with the assistance of a tutor.
Susan Wilson spends many hours a week driving Brittney to auditions, voice lessons, and film sets, and says it involves a total commitment on her part.
"I'm now totally committed to my daughter's career," Susan said. "I'm really proud of her. She's also an honour student."
At age four, Ferland was the youngest person ever nominated for a Daytime Emmy award for her starring role in the 1999 movie Mermaid. She is currently starring in the Stephen King mini-series entitled Kingdom Hospital.
"I play Mary, a ghost who haunts the hospital," Ferland said. "I'm really scary."
Jodelle said she is excited about the trip to Los Angeles. Her future aspirations include singing and acting like pop artist Britney Spears. Valerie Ferland recalls how her daughter's acting career began at the tender age of two.
"I heard this voice coming from an upstairs bedroom one day and I couldn't figure who was talking," Valerie said. "Both my other children were at school. I realized that it was Jodelle reading her older sister's big dramatic monologue. She was only two at the time."
Both Brittney and Jodelle have been friends ever since meeting at an audition four years ago. Jodelle said she likes hanging out and having sleepovers with Brittney. The two girls are neighbors in the same Pitt Meadows town house complex. They both agree that they are never in competition with each other at auditions.
"If I don't get it then I want Jodelle to get it," Brittney said.
Brittney has revealed a personal goal that she has set for herself.
"I want to win an Academy award by 15," Brittney says. "That's in two years," Jodelle says with a laugh. "Hey, I"m well on my way," Brittney said"
